Elisa
Elisa was swept away with the other soldiers as if by a raging river. The current of the retreat was unstoppable. The Brunians were mixed in with Lakmians now and even some of the Erlonian regiments. She saw General Pittâs command flag swept along with the mass in front of her.
Infantry volleys sounded from behind her, but she could no longer see the enemy. She could only see the mammoths looming in the north.
The line of enemy beasts had become disorganized. The pikemen squares had done their job so far. But Elisa could see the mammoths swinging back out wide again and reforming.
She retreated towards the east with the rest of her unit, but she wondered if the Lakmians would be able to hold off another charge.
If not, the retreating allies would be fully exposed to the next mammoth charge.
The mammoth horns were joined with actual calls from the beasts. They were long and low moans that reverberated around the allied soldiers. The mammoths started first their charge and were on the Lakmian squares in what seemed like an instant.
Elisa could almost feel the crunch of the impact from the beasts.
Cracks ripped over the battle. Lakmians flew in the air in all directions. Pikes snapped in two. Screaming and booming continued to fill Elisaâs ears.
The mammoths kept coming.
The retreat picked up speed as fear gripped the men. More and more yelling reached Elisaâs ears. Her unitâs blue flag was dropped in favor of a full sprint towards the safety of the eastern hills.
Elisa didnât have any orders to give. There was nothing for her to do but run with the men from her first defeat.
My first defeat.
That thought struck her as she ran. This was her second battle, but her first taste of defeat.
It was terrible and horrifying.
There were so many soldiers around her. Every single one of them ran with fear-filled eyes towards the eastern hill.
Their flank had been compromised and now the army was broken. Elisa continued with them with a final glance back towards the mammoths. They had finally slowed, spears sticking out from many and more being thrown at them from surviving Lakmians.
The brave pikemen and Jinetes kept fighting. They would cover the rest of the retreat.
The ground started to rise under Elisa. She made a final push up the hill and moved towards the sound of the Brunian cannons. She was almost there, almost to safety.
She crested the hill and started down the other side. The artillery raged to her right. She slowed and finally found a path out of the main flow of the soldiers.
There was a huddle of officers on the top of the hill, between the retreat and the artillery. Lodi or Lauriston werenât present. She saw General Pitt looking haggard but still standing.
Elisa needed to continue down the hill with the main Erlonian retreat, but she stole one last glance back towards the town. She saw the entire battle and retreat like a giant and epic painting.
The blue Erlonian uniforms streamed from the southern portion of town, some units still holding a strong line to cover the retreat.
